George W. Bush became president in 2001 after one of the closest general elections in US history. Before assuming the presidency, Bush was a businessman and served as Governor of Texas from 1995 to 2000. Environmentalists have criticized the Bush administration for abandoning the Kyoto Treaty ratification aimed at cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and for reducing air pollution controls through the Clear Skies Act.
