Research Projects

  • 10/06 - dato: IDIOM / Information Diffusion across Interactive Online Media (www.idiom.at).
Linguists define 'idiom' as an expression whose meaning is different from the literal meanings of its component words. Similarly, the study of information diffusion promises insights that cannot be inferred from individual network elements. Media monitoring projects often focus on a particular medium, or neglect important aspects of the human language. The IDIOM project will address these gaps to reveal fundamental mechanisms of information diffusion across media with distinct interactive characteristics (Web Sites, RSS feeds, blogs etc.).
  • 01/06 - dato: AVALON / Acquisition and VALidation of Ontologies (kmi.tugraz.at/avalon). Valuable knowledge that surrounds the workflows of business entities can be extracted automatically and represented as ontological structure. The methodology is built upon a cybernetic control system to automatically align extracted knowledge with business processes, external indicators and individual expertise. The project’s adaptive services are particularly useful in volatile business environments, which require dynamic reconfiguration of business processes and a flexible allocation of resources.
  • 07/04 - 12/04: US Election 2004 Web Monitor (www.ecoresearch.net/election2004).
How do international media, the Fortune 1000 and environmental organizations tailor articles to fit their political agenda? To answer this question, the US Election 2004 Web Monitor processes more than 500,000 documents each week – about 125 million words in 11 million sentences. Estimates of attention and attitude towards the presidential candidates complement keywords summarizing key issues associated with each candidate.
  • 01/04 - dato: EcoMonitor (www.ecomonitor.net).
The Internet is transforming how society manages the explosive growth and dwindling lifespan of environmental information. Yet the vast amount of online resources conceals trends and warning signals. By identifying such hidden patterns and providing environmental content in raw, aggregated and visual formats, ECOmonitor aims to enhance policy-making, raise public awareness and translate scientific insights into behavioral change on organizational and individual levels.
  • 09/02 - dato: EcoResearch (www.ecoresearch.net).
The interdisciplinary Research Network on Environmental Online Communication brings together scientists of different backgrounds to explore the development, management, promotion, and evaluation of networked information systems that advocate sustainability and the protection of natural ecosystems. The network supports the research activities of its members, identifies synergies, coordinates the various projects, and helps with resource acquisition.
  • 01/99 - dato: webLyzard (www.webLyzard.com).
Built on more than five years of research into developing and managing Webbased information systems, the project analyzes navigational system and interface design from structural and textual perspectives. Web metrics aim to determine success factors and uncover weaknesses of deployed system by comparing large samples of Web sites across region and industry. Currently, webLyzard mirrors and analyzes a set of more than 6000 sites in monthly intervals.
  • 10/00 - dato: EcoInvest (www.ecoinvest.org). Conceptual development of an independent investment portal for socially and ecologically responsible investments; in a joint effort with the Austrian Society for Environment and Technology and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management, the project evaluated and compared a number of open-source content management systems.
  • 07/02 - 01/03: La Gamba Relaunch (www.lagamba.at).
With special regard to the organizational structure of small scientific institutions and regional peculiarities of the tropical station La Gamba in Costa Rica, this project pursues the following goals: Analysis of organizational structures; reorganization of informational processes; development of an interactive platform including reservation functionality and research database.
  • 01/01 - 03/02: European eContent Tourism Survey. Longitudinal survey on behalf of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber that contrasts a sample of 500 Austrian tourism sites with the international competition. Preliminary results were presented at the European Forum Alpbach in August 2001 (www.alpbach.org).
  • 10/97 - 07/98: webMapper. Acquisition of implicit and explicit user feedback by means of online observations and questionnaires; review of commercially available Web-tracking software for analyzing and visualizing customer access patterns.
  • 03/97 - 01/98: Electronic Market Transactions.
Reference modeling of interactive Web sites for the food retail industry; based on an initial assessment of standardized solutions to build and maintain electronic transaction systems.
  • 10/96 - 01/97: Xerox.at. Conceptual development and technical implementation of a Web information system for Rank Xerox Austria based on a Lotus Notes / Domino server architecture (www.xerox.at).
  • 09/95 - 12/96: MotoMIR Data Analysis. Data analysis and interpretation at the Department of Sports Physiology of the University of Vienna (part of the Austro-Russian aerospace cooperation; measurement and interpretation of muscular atrophy under conditions of microgravity).
