The dissemination of environmental maps through the internet is important for participation and awareness building of the public. Most existing system sharing maps over the internet are based on highly specialized WebGIS systems. However, most such systems are difficult to use. "EnviroMap" is an alternative option for an internet-based environmental atlas. The system is based on a raster file format with a predefined map projection and cell size.
The EnviroMap system aims to bring together holders of environmental data and data seekers. For data holders, the system provides a tool for data documentation and upload, so that they can publish a raster version of their data. Data seekers can access all data with a standard web browsers and Java Virtual Machine. Thus EnviroMap serves as a marketplace for environmental maps, where data holders can make accessible an simplified raster version of their original GIS data and advertise the availability of the original data. The system is fully functional and will be continuously further developed, particularly with respect to improving the user interface.
